Here you can register for the 2018 workshop "Physics and Chemistry" of the Physics graduate school. The workshop takes place on February, 20-21 in Güstrow. The venue is the "Haus der Kirche" as in the last years. It is conveniently reached by taking the commuter train from Rostock to Güstrow main station and a 10 minute walk.
All participants can be accommodated at the venue and are encouraged to do so, since the poster session will be held in the evening. Apart from special cases participants will be housed in double rooms. If this, for whatever reasons, is unacceptable for you please write an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Also, feel free to arrange a different housing for yourself. In that case leave the accommodation check box blank.
All meals are included in the Workshop fee. If you want vegan or vegetarian food, please mark the corresponding checkboxes and we will arrange this.
Every participant is expected to contribute either a poster or a talk. Further, each participant can only attend one of the soft-skill courses. The offered courses concerning "scientific writing" and "presentation tools" are targeted at the natural science community. You have to decide upon registration which course you want to take.
Note on the scientific writing course: The scientific writing course is organized by the university graduate academy for financial reasons. This means that there is a separate registration as well as a separate participation fee for this course. If you are a member of the Graduate Academy, you can pay the participation fee for the writing course from your graduate academy budget. Otherwise you have to pay it yourself. So become a member of the Graduate Academy if you are not yet. If you have not received the sample supervision agreement for the membership application via mail or experience problems with the application, feel free to contact email@example.com.

The reforms which have been implemented since the Bologna Process have led to a number of significant changes: an increasing number of courses at universities are being held in English, and postgraduate and doctorate students are frequently choosing to write their theses or research papers in English to reach a wider audience. In this seminar, participants will become familiar with various aspects of clarity which are essential for producing logical, reader-friendly prose. As well as examining the various stages in the writing process, we will focus on the structure of abstracts and, using examples of “best practice” articles, and closely look at how a professional doctoral thesis should be written. In doing so, participants will enrich their academic lexical repertoire and be able to identify common errors which frequently arise in academic texts.
Participants are advised to take along excerpts of personally written articles for discussion and analysis. An abstract of approx. 200 words (if available) or an excerpt from an article can be sent to the course coordinator one week before the start of the seminar. It will be corrected and returned during the seminar. The workshop will be held in English.
- planning and organising a scientific paper
- writing effective introductions and conclusions

Presentation tools for young scientists (Kira Ludwig)
Expect work and success, not miracles. The workshop will focus on the story, work on your own selfesteem and on polishing the slides. We want to go very much into practice and also discuss and learn in some smaller theoretical units. I offer to videotape the exercises in the workshop. This provides a somehow objective eye on You as a presenter.
Thus, You and Your 3-minute-presentations with individual evaluation are the core of the workshop. You should use one of your own presentations, already held or in preparation, to work on during the seminar. We want to draw the attention to the story and the line of suspense as the driving forces for effective presentation of Your science.
- Part I: Tell the story: plausibility, dramaturgy and beauty
- Part II: Self confident presentations
- Part III: "Polishing" slides
