Abstract:

The project uses the intense short wavelength radiation from the free electron laser FLASH to characterize clusters and warm dense matter with special emphasis on electron correlation effects. In one of the experiments the short wavelength radiation is used to explore the electronic ground state properties of mass--selected clusters by angular resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. With the high photon energy the whole valence band as well as core levels can be addressed. By analyzing the chemical shifts, the structure of clusters can be determined. Further correlation phenomena like core hole screening will be studied. In addition, microplasmas in the warm dense matter regime are subject of investigations. Experiments are performed on a jet of droplets. A hydrogen droplet is first transformed into a microplasma by an intense, ultrashort optical laser pulses. A subsequent pulse from the EUV-FEL then probes the system. The collective EUV Thomson scattering signal allows for a model--free plasma characterization, i.e. plasma electron density and temperatur. By varying the time delay between the microplasma formation and the FEL analysis pulse the evolution of the plasma parameters can be studied in real time. The resuts of the experiments will be compared to all--electron simulations conducted in project A2.
