| Abstract: |
We investigate the correlated and collective dynamics of atoms, molecules, and clusters in intense laser fields employing time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). Processes like ionization, excitation, recombination, and (inner) shell effects are included self-consistently in a TDDFT description. A versatile TDDFT code, which solves the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equations in various geometries, will be developed in the course of this project and applied to topical problems studied within the SFB. However, care has to be exercised when TDDFT is used beyond linear response, as commonly employed exchange correlation potentials are not capable of describing correctly the correlation effects in strongly driven quantum systems. Moreover, the density functionals for some of the observables of interest (e.g., energy spectra) are still unknown. To that end we aim at improving TDDFT by developing and testing new functionals using exactly solvable model systems as benchmarks.
