Work-Life Balance / Family's and Women's Advancement

The collaborative research center SFB 652 supports families and women in order to offer a good work-life balance, to increase their flexibility in scientific work, and to enhance the participation of women in natural sciences. The main objectives and opportunities are described below including information material as well as corresponding electronic application forms. Both SFB project members as well as associated members (e.g., members of the integrated graduate school) can apply for support.

Childcare

University Kindergarten: A long-term goal of the research center is the participation in the internal academic kindergarten infrastructure of the University of Rostock. Presently the university is in negotiation with the GGP (Gesellschaft für Gesundheit und Pädagogik) in order to realize childcare that meets the demands of scientific work, e.g., by extended opening hours.

Additional Childcare Support: An additional child care service is set, providing funding for childcare in case of illnesses, extra scientific activities, conferences, and SFB-relevant internal meetings. We initiated a cooperation with the childcare service "Engelchen und Bengelchen".
Usage of the service:
Parents make a written contract with the agency Engelchen und Bengelchen each time they use the service and a general contract which covers all child specific issues (e.g. alimentation, habits, bringing and picking the children from day care, contact person in case of emergency, giving the children a ride, visit of public playgrounds, riding bikes ect.). The request for child care has to be announced by the parents at a latest three hours before starting time either via phone or email to the agency Engelchen und Bengelchen. Predictable care cases have to be announced as early as possible. Please note the leaflet with additional information: leaflet childcare service

Application form: become a member of the childcare service This form has to be filled once. It is necessary for using the childcare service.

Application form: Confirmation This form has to be filled directly after making use of the childcare service. Here the childcare person and the parents confirm the service.

Application form: Confirmation for groups This form has to be filled directly after making use of the childcare service. It should be used if a group of children (different parents) are cared for. Here the childcare person and the parents confirm the service.

Signed applications are to be directed to the SFB board via postal mail (see application form) or to the responsible office (secretary see above).
Family-friendly seminar schedule: It is further intended to schedule colloquia talks and important meetings in family-friendly time slots. Since fall 2010 the colloquium of the graduate school is scheduled for Thursday 15:00 and the physics colloquium of the institute for Thursday 16:00, i.e., both begin an hour earlier than before.

Infrastructure

The SFB supports the installation of baby change tables, places for breastfeeding, and habitable rooms containing a workplace and a computer.

Student Assistants

Parents of infants (up to 3 years) can be supported by extra assistant personnel. The SFB offers funding to employ student assistants to balance the workload.

Home Office and Computer Equipment

For todays scientific work computers and internet access are indispensable (Email, data analysis, scientific writing, online journals). Especially for parents of infants the opportunity of home office work provides meaningful additional flexibility, e.g., in case of an illnesses of a child. The SFB provides limited funds for mobile computer equipment, such as laptops, in order to support home office work of young parents with up-to-date hardware.

Female scientist award

A female scientist prize will be awarded annually for an outstanding diploma thesis or dissertation. All direct and associated female members of the SFB 652 are qualified to apply. A major objective of the award is to increase the visibility and the social prestige of our outstanding female researchers. Furthermore it is intended to encourage more young women to share the excitement of doing cutting-edge research in the scientific field of the SFB 652.

Additional and Soft-Skill qualifications

The SFB provides funds for advanced training programs to support female researches and to enhance their prospects in science. Therefore courses for communication, information technology, language courses, etc. can be funded. Furthermore the SFB offers financial aid to attend conference and meetings.
